Designer kitchen for contemporary riverside house

With a perfect plot by the Hamble River this client was determined to take her time and get every detail right. From early on in the house planning process she chose to work with bulthaup in Winchester for her kitchen. She wanted a luxury kitchen design that would work in a family context and allow her to look out at the river when cooking.

It was important to have plenty of work surface space for preparation and a 'breakfast' bar where the four children could sit. An oak floor was picked for the whole open plan living room with large windows surrounding the space on two sides.

To keep the open airy feeling a kaolin (white) laminate kitchen from the b3 range was agreed upon, plus a cherry wood bar in keeping with the floor. Two matching islands formed a galley kitchen in the centre of the room - one with the induction hob, and one with the sink and two Fisher Paykel dishwasher drawers.

A grouping of tall units float above the floor at one end and house a neat row of steam oven, oven, coffee machine and two warming drawers - plus a discrete large fridge at each end.

A mix of handle free units and ones with handles ensured both form and function. Handle free 'touch' opening cupboards on the islands face out into the living area and give a smooth smart look, whilst handles on the in-facing drawers and cupboards make using the kitchen easy.

The sink area, or 'water point' in bulthaup terminology, is superb. The two stainless steel sinks, with wide draining areas, are laser welded into the laminate worktop at the bulthaup factory. The chopping board and colander tray both slide across for ease of use. A Quooker hot water tap and good quality mixer tap complete the area.
